Strictly Come Dancing star not a racist

One Two, One.....There has been a row brewing over a remark that Anton Du Beke (or Anthony Beke to his memory) made about his Strictly Come Dancing partner Laila Rouass. He used the term "Paki" in a rehearsal period. Anton is a man given to banter. He likes to prod and probe with words, some of which are inappropriate or meaningless or downright mysterious. However, he gives off no vibes whatsoever of being a racist.

Laila is actually not a Pakistani. She has an Indian mother and a Moroccan father, hence her surname. She was born in London and is English. She is reported to have accepted his apology. She enjoys dancing with Anton.

Now I don't think he should have made the remark. However, the people who seem most upset by all this are not the two people themselves but the politically correct types who have come out of the woodwork to create a stir. They have deemed this word offensive. It may be and probably is. But I think there is a far greater issue here. The promoters of political correctness have a kind of self-righteous guardianship of other people's feelings. They also have a guilt complex gene in their bodies about empire and presumed white supremacy. So they crawl and creep and feign cupboard love to make sure no "ethnic minority person" jumps to the wrong conclusion. It's a kind of pre-emptive strike.

So we all now know this remark was used. No doubt revealed by a BBC insider keen to parrot that the "organisation does not condone offensive language in the workplace". I'd rather people learnt not to use offensive words or swear so much or generally act in a boorish manner. I prefer self-control to self-righteous indignation.

Simon Cowell strictly against a ratings war

Xactly what Simon says!Simon Cowell has come out to say that he does not think that the BBC is doing a good thing by placing Strictly Come Dancing up against his X Factor show. This is not about sour grapes, it is just that Simon thinks that licence fee payers could enjoy both shows. He's a fan of Strictly so he's not grinding an axe here. Sounds all very plausible.

However, I sense he's got a bit of an ITV feather protruding from his impresario's hat. He is asking ITV to shift X Factor. Now there was a time when ITV, in the form of Granada, LWT or Thames Television, would relish the thought of humbling the BBC in a ratings war. Not anymore. Now we live in a recession, where TV advertisers are keen to see guaranteed audiences. With so much other than terrestrial television for people to watch, ITV is getting currant buns instead of a slice of the cake. It stands to reason advertisers want to keep ITV programmes in front of as many of the dwindling number of viewers as they can.

The BBC is not phased, though. They blame Merlin for the timing of Strictly. Simon Cowell and ITV may need their own wizard to conjure up a few tricks if they are to combat BBC spin!

Strictly Andy Mandy

Peter Mandelson has let it be known that he is slightly envious of John Sargent's dancing technique. He's also got an eye on the ratings. So Peter wants to be considered as a Strictly Come Dancing competitor. I think this is an excellent idea. Whilst I deplore his political habits, I must confess that there is a bit to be admired about Mandelson. Now I'm not going overboard, just recognising that he does have an element of star quality about him.

Peter is no shrinking violet. More a rose with thorns in the wrong places. However, I strongly suggest that the BBC gives serious thought to this. Mandelson on the floor will be a ratings success for the BBC. Detractors and fans will watch in equal measure. Can you imagine the brilliance of it all?

Bruce: "Craig, your comments, please."
Craig: "Well, you do surprise me! Not exactly a star performance, but you managed to come back from your early mistake. I'd say you've gone from Prince of Darkness to Queen of the Dancefloor!"
Bruce: "Nicely put, Craig, I'm sure. Bruno?"
Bruno: "He took the words out of my mouth! What more can I say? A tour de force, darling!"

It will be fantastic. If the BBC is worried about political balance, then Vince Cable is desperate for a go too. That leaves the matter of who the Tory Twinkletoes will be.

Any suggestions?
