At least 27 people were decapitated at a ranch in northern Guatemala near the border with Mexico, in a grisly mass murder feared linked to drug traffickers operating in the area, police said Sunday.
The discovery in the department of Peten was at a farm in San Andres, some 500 kilometers (310 miles) north of the capital.
Guatemala has one of the highest murder rates in Latin America, with an average of 18 homicides each day, most of which are attributed to the feared "maras" street gangs.
The violence, however, pales in comparison to the brutal drug war to the north, in Mexico, where over 37,000 people have died since December 2006, when a military crackdown was launched on the illegal drug cartels.
