This European election is not so much about the winners but more about the losers. Labour lost votes by the truckload. Apart from the Greens, English Democrats and Christian Alliance, the parties were level-pegging with 2004. The question for the Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, UKIP and BNP is this. "Has our support peaked or can we mop up some of these armchair critics of Gordon Brown and politics in general?"
Because the main beneficiaries of the Euro elections in the UK were the 66% who stayed away, muttering about Gordon and all the ills in society. These armchair voters have allowed the BNP to rejoice in a victory. It has recharged the batteries of UKIP and given them a baker's dozen of MEPs. It has made the Conservatives feel that they have triumphed, whilst in fact they did virtually nothing to show that they are on a winning streak. And the Liberal Democrats have come out without a stain but with their old clothes still on.
Labour won the armchair vote by a landslide. They have done so in the last ten years. Harriet Harman keeps saying Labour won the last general election. They did no such thing. They just got more MPs than the other parties. But only 20% of the electorate went out to vote for them in 2005.
British democracy has a problem. The armchair voters let in the BNP, but they also allow us to have "winners" who are really "losers". If we had electric chairs for these backsliders to lounge in, would it encourage a better turnout?
Now this may all sound like I want Labour to do well. No I don't, but I would like the people to feel that democracy counts, that it matters in our lives. I don't know if these stay-at-home voters are Conservatives or what they are. My guess is that they are a pretty mixed bag. However, it's either that this 66% don't care or they think this is the best way to protest. No, the best way to protest is to vote, but to vote with a clear view of what you really want.
I just don't want the UK run by the armchair voters. That's worse than any party you don't like being elected. It's up to the parties to get the voters to the polling stations.

Cornish pasty needs no Brown sauce
Gordon Brown is in a real bind today. Mulling over the worst election results for Labour ever! Forget about 1918, it's never been this bad. In Cornwall Labour came sixth, behind Mebyon Kernow, the Cornish nationalists. A Labour Party supporter is now and endangered species in that county. The only question is whether anyone wants to save them. Currently the answer is - NO!

European Elections June 2009
I've closed my poll on voting intentions. Considering I'm eurosceptically conservatively minded on this blog, it wasn't going to be a scientific result, but it gave an interesting result nevertheless. I guess it shows that some party supporters are more net savvy than others.
60 votes were cast and I offered ten parties to choose from.

Are UKIP voters barmey?
You couldn't make it up. Traditionally in the UK, polling station staff fold ballot papers before giving them to voters. UKIP's high command, ever vigilant for the problems their supporters face at election time, have demanded unfolded ballot papers. This is because some voters cannot conceive of the idea of unfolding them before putting a cross on their paper.One man from York told the BBC he had been "absolutely shocked" that he could not find the party he wanted to vote for on the ballot paper and had to ask officials where it was. "They explained you have to unfold it again, right at the very bottom there was another very neat fold that you could not see, folded backwards," he said, implying that UKIP was under the last fold (but he could possibly check that!).
My question is "Should such a person be let into a polling station in the first place?"
You have to wonder! UKIP is saying, "We are getting literally hundreds of calls saying we can't find you on the ballot paper so we voted for somebody else." It's all a load of nonsense. Pull the other one. UKIP is just in it for a publicity stunt. Or a pre-emptive strike in case it all goes pearshaped!
More fool the BBC and the Electoral Commission for falling for their prattish behaviour.

Libertas not UKIP on 4th June
Libertas offers the best hope for changing the trading arrangements, political secrecy and the undemocratic nature of the European Union. Libertas stands for ending the corruption, stopping the waste, putting democracy at the heart of Europe and returning control to the member nations. It does NOT want Britain to be consumed by a bureaucratic European superstate. It does want the UK to be a leader in a free, democratic, efficient European Union that only tackles those things that are best done at an international level.
That means NO MORE laws interfering in the domestic UK governance. NO MORE quangos set up to waste money. NO MORE undemocratic decisions taken by "ministers" who only want it their way. The Irish, Dutch and French are the only countries to have had a democratic vote in recent years and they were told that their answers were "un-European".
Libertas wants co-operation only on an international level. This would obviously benefit trade, travel, employment, investment and environmental issues. So it is a positive YES to beneficial international agreement.
You can vote for the goons, gadflies and general expenses grabbers if you want. Only Libertas offers a constructive approach for eurosceptics. In fact, I don't really like that word. I'm positive about wanting a Europe of co-operating nation states, where each can be proud of its culture, its laws, and its lawmaking. I am positive about protecting the UK from the superstate bureaucrats.
Anthony Butcher is standing for Libertas in the North-West. He says, "Why am I standing for Libertas? Libertas is offering a future for Europe never seriously considered before. Until now, the choice has always been 'more or less' Europe. But it doesn't have to be that way. Because Libertas is standing right across the European Union, we could have the power to change the entire direction of the EU. I don't want an EU superstate. I want a Europe of cooperating sovereign nations. Cooperation doesn't work when it is forced upon us top-down by unelected bureaucrats in Brussels. As we have seen, all this achieves is growing resentment and an ever increasing bureaucracy."
That's the kind of MEP I know we need in this country. He also says, "...I later joined the UK Independence Party and was elected to their National Executive Committee. In 2006 I left the party feeling that although I agreed with many of their complaints about the European Union, I couldn't support their negative direction and hostile form of politics, both internal and external." Negative direction. That's it in a nutshell. You only have to look at UKIP's track record to find that it is a kind of "ferrets meets Kilkenny cats party" to put you right off. Expense scandals, mortgage frauds, leadership battles, backbiting and defections. Not a particularly good endorsement for elected representation.
For a positive approach to tackling the wrongs in the European Union vote for your Libertas candidates. Let's make it right for us in Europe.

Libertas or Jury Team? It has to be one of them!
The European elections on Thursday are going to be a watershed for British democracy. In the wake of the expenses scandal, the three main parties are going to get a battering. I see that UKIP and the BNP are favoured by some and UKIP's sun is rising. However, the sun goes down at night time and that's usually when UKIP's plotters are seen about town. In today's Daily Mail Peter Oborne says it all. He says -
"Both party leaders have protected more senior MPs. For example, Brown gave a clean bill of health to Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon, Work & Pensions Secretary James Purnell and Chancellor Alistair Darling. Yet all three are tax-cheats whose conduct, if replicated by an ordinary member of the public, would undoubtedly lead to a criminal investigation. These men should not be allowed to remain in British public life.
Cameron is guilty of the same inconsistency. While being tough on some backbenchers, he seems blind to the fact that a number of his Shadow Cabinet have been guilty of loathsome and amoral conduct. I would never vote for a political party which includes Francis Maude (who claimed almost £35,000 for for a mortgage on a London flat a few minutes' walk from a house he already owned and then rented out) or Alan Duncan (who submitted thousands of pounds of expenses for his garden before agreeing that the spending 'could be considered excessive')."
If only this scandal was not promoted by the general public as being about duck houses and moat cleaning only. It is about cynical manipulation to keep acolytes in place and to feed a few MPs to the electorate to stave off the full effects of a political lynching. Oborne suggests -
"It goes without saying that it is impossible to support a racist party such as the BNP. Also, UKIP, the most obvious choice, can immediately be ruled out because one of its MEPs is facing prosecution for fraud. This leaves those of us seeking politicians of integrity and decency with just two possible parties: Jury Team and Libertas.
Jury Team is a new political movement set up by philanthropist Sir Paul Judge, who has an outstanding record as a businessman and has donated generously to many charities. His own integrity is beyond reproach and his list of candidates standing next week are independent figures (his team includes Esther Rantzen and former anti-sleaze MP Martin Bell) who are determined to clean up politics.
Meanwhile, Libertas was founded by charismatic Irish businessman Declan Ganley who, in a referendum, persuaded Irish voters to reject the Lisbon Treaty which would have given Brussels many more powers. As a result, the British people already owe Ganley an enormous debt of gratitude. Equally, the European political class hate him - spending hundreds of thousands of EU money on a propaganda campaign linking him with a CIA plot devised by U.S. neo-conservatives to weaken the EU.
Significantly, this smear campaign has failed.
At a time of moral squalor and decay in Westminster and Brussels, both Libertas and Jury Team offer voters a hugely refreshing - and, perhaps, the only proper - alternative on Thursday."
I will be supporting Libertas. It was a tough choice, but in this respect Libertas is fighting for transparency in the European Parliament and the EU instutions. Jury Team would be a better bet for Westminster elections. But that's my view. I'm still a conservative thinker and politically driven in conservative ways. Just as Tories are not necessarily Conservatives, I am now a conservative that is not completely Conservative.

UKIP - Do I understand them?
I see on the UKIP website that they have denounced Bob Spink, MP for Castle Point, as not being one of theirs. They say - Bob Spink? He's not one of us - as if they are proud of it. However, it was not long ago they were happy to shove out leaflets saying that they were the fourth largest party with MEPs, Peers and One MP. That MP being Bob Spink. What sort of moronic party is this?Bob Spink was sort of in UKIP I suppose! Nigel Farage got terribly excited when he "joined". He waffled, "I am delighted to welcome the hard-working and deeply principled Bob Spink as UKIP's first Member of Parliament. As Bob is a signatory to the 'Better Off Out' campaign, joining UKIP was a logical step." Farage is a real plonker at times. He takes against people quite easily. Bob Spink just got into one of their revolving doors.
I won't be voting for them. A lot of nonsense comes out of UKIP, mainly slagging each other off. If you do vote for them, don't be surprised if they turn out to be expenses cheats or party poopers. Last time they got twelve, including the ridiculous Kilroy-Silk. He soon went, then they got two more in the dodgy department. You'd be voting for bottles on a wall! Veritas, UK First, Popular Alliance, they're all ex-UKIP sorts. The only thing they have in common is wanting to be out of the European Union so they can join EFTA to come in at the back door!

D-Day for Gordon Brown!
June the 6th will be Gordon Brown's D-Day! Disaster Day, Dumping Day, or Departure Day. Take your pick or make one up yourself. He will be gone by that day. A month of hearing about the sleaze of politicians, the daily disasters in the economy and the tortuous campaigning of a prime minister who is fading fast, will have convinced the Labour Party they need a new leader. The fact that the European Elections will have provided the worst results in the history of the party will have come as no surprise. It will have just added to the desire for a complete change of leadership.Why would anyone want to vote Labour?

Libertas is let out of the stable!
Libertas, the pro-European anti-EU centralising party started by Irish political maverick Declan Ganley, is out of the stable and running around the EU paddock. They hope to have candidates across the EU, so that every citizen can vote en masse against the constitution of the elite.
It is going to be some kind of electoral fisticuffs this time round. In the right corner is the BNP talking tough on any subject passing them by. Then in the middle to muddled ground there are the Ukippers, still fighting the cause but with folding tents to contend with in several constituencies. They've even got this United Kingdom First Party sniping at them. It is a bit of a pompous title considering that there are plenty of us who want to put the country first but may not necessarily agree with them! The English Democrats are giving it a whirl again, plus all manner of disparate groups, who whilst not being in the contest will be adding their ten pence worth.
Libertas may well do well. I will look at their manifesto. The LibDems have gone all prissy and EU protectionist. A spokesman said "anti-European voters in Europe were spoilt for choice" in the upcoming election. Cheeky sod! He thinks every person who is not brown-nosing in Brussels is anti-European. Well, chummy, they are not! Those of us opposed to the corruptions and vices of the European Elite are very pro Europe. It's just that we want a democratic, open and free Europe devoid of these pointy penpushers and legalised layabouts.
Roll on the voting!
A postscript! I've just seen this from the cravenly slavish EU fan by the name of Graham Watson, a LibDem MEP. Rather takes the biscuit. Watson is as undemocratic as they come when he wants his own way. Fancy that. He thinks that Ireland could be chucked out of the EU for voting no. Well, he may not last past June, so that won't be a bad thing. Democracy? Not in Graham Watson's mind!

Media spinners not so Independent!
When the Independent newspaper was born, it trumpeted the fact that it was independent and would tell the truth. Telling fibs is no good whether they are for malicious reasons or for supposedly good ones. And I'm not talking about little white lies.
The BNP has caught the Independent out. The newspaper, by publishing a picture of some depraved knucklehead from the Nationalist Alliance (a Hitler fan club of sorts!), have taken spin and deception on board. Now I use this blog to campaign against spin and deception. What a stupid man Nigel Morris, deputy political editor of the Independent, must be if he thought he could get away with this unnoticed. Of course the BNP is eagle-eyed for such stuff. They complained to the Press Complaints Commission. Whereupon Morris just cropped the offending picture! It is obvious he was trying to insinuate that the man in the picture was a BNP member.
It's this type of schoolboy scripting that does the debate no good whatsoever. Singled-handedly he's just given them more political ammunition to use on the doorsteps. If he is the Deputy Political Editor, let him engage in some well-thought out political opinion. Good heavens, there's enough to put to the BNP for some proper answers. But, please, let's not have childish capers like this!

Labour flunkies warn Brown over BNP Euro chances
With the BNP winning a safe Labour seat on Sevenoaks Council, the Labour hierachy is getting all in a tizzy. I can't think why. They've never really bothered with the people they say they support. They are more concerned with feathering their own nests. The BNP has taken a coach and horses through Labour's arrogant assumption that people on sink estates will vote for them. Well they won't, not any more.
It's all a crying shame. People at the bottom of the social heap being excited and manipulated by a minor party that couldn't run a whelk stall. The New Labour ponces have some history to be answering for. A senior Labour source told The Independent, “We have got to get our act together – and very quickly. No one is focusing on the European elections; no one knows who is in charge.” Well, nothing new in that department.
Labour needs to address the core problems affecting people who are attracted to the BNP. Housing, jobs, schools and hospitals. These four are the ones that affect these voters most. These are the issues the BNP are exploiting. Gordon Brown needs to get his jacket off and get down to the level where the BNP can be taken on. It's no use taking a lofty attitude and saying he won't debate with them. That over sensitive nonsense should stop right now.
The truth is we will probably get two or three BNP Euro MEPs come June. What then? Will Nick Griffin MEP be banned from Question Time and other BBC outlets? The more the poncy brigade carry on, the deeper the BNP gets entrenched.
